It may not seem important to choose a theme for a 50th birthday party... but it is! Usually when we plan a wedding or baby shower... or a kids birthday party... we always have a theme. But, it's so important for any well thought out party plan, to have a theme. Why? Because... it just adds to the "flavor" of the occasion. And, it helps to build anticipation for the event for everyone. 50th Birthday Ideas for Theme Parties are not all that unusual... they can be very simple themes.
You're theme doesn't have to be extravagant. It should be a theme that anyone would be comfortable with. No strippers! If you have a theme idea that you will be asking your guests to participate in... by wearing a particular style or color of clothing, make it easy on everyone. Don't come up with a grand idea that will require your guests to purchase a new outfit or rent a costume. Think of theme ideas that everyone can participate in but not burden them... this is supposed to be fun!
50th birthday parties are a great reason for celebration and they can be enjoyed by guests of any age. But the party does not "have" to require every guest wear black... unless you are planning a black tie affair.
What is the guest of honors favorite color? Everyone could wear that color to the party. Or, maybe they have a favorite hobby that could be worked in to the theme.... and attire. If your planning a surprise birthday party it could be a bit trickier for the guest of honor to play along... but you could always have a backup t-shirt for them.
Now it's time to choose a menu and decorations. Although the theme is a bit different than your average cocktail party, the planning aspect is very much the same. It is attention to detail that is most important.
Popular themes for 50th birthday parties:
- Hawaiian or a beach theme. All the guests dress up in swimsuits and straw hats and drink tropical drinks. Or they dress in Hawaiian prints or their favorite beach wear and flip flops. The food and decorations are easy to think of.
- All black theme. Everyone wears black... head to toe if possible. The decorations could include black balloons, black tablecloths, and even black candles.
- A 1970's flashback theme. You can request that the guests dress from the'70's and play the music that was popular. The food isn't particular themed in this flashback. It's not soda fountain and it's not mall food. It was McDonald's and Pizza. Try thinking of an extravagant pizza making buffet... or just hamburgers on the grill. It will really be a blast from the past!
- Tie Dye Theme. Everyone wears something in tie-dye or similar patterns. The food can be easy, buffet style. But really play up the theme with table decorations, serving platters and party favors.
- Favorite color theme. We already covered this... but if everyone is dressed in the same color... it really makes a splash! Don't try to put the color as the emphasis for the food, but use the color as the theme for serving platters, party favors and table decorations. Balloons are always an inexpensive way to add color to a party atmosphere.
The best reason of all to choose a theme when you looking for 50th birthday ideas? It makes the planning so much easier. You can search online for all sorts of items that fit into your chosen theme... and it makes it more fun for everyone to feel like they are participating in the party, not just showing up.
